I'm usually something of a t-shirt traditionalist. I like bold, screenprinted shirts. They just appeal to me on a basic level. But here's the thing: I'm slowly coming over to the dark side of crafty shirts, because I've seen a lot of cool applique work lately.
One great example of some bold applique work is Binkie, a New Zealand-based t-shirt company. They use cut outs of basic, nature-inspired shapes (with collections focused on flowers, birds and other animals, and possessions). The specific fabrics they use are pretty fantastic, ranging from classic antique-style prints to solid colors to florals. The flower within a flower aspect of some of their Flowers collection is especially strong work.
But before you dismiss the applique concept as just for the ladies, check out their Possessions collection. Plaid pipes, floral guns and more prove that fabric on fabric can be a very masculine look, for any guy who's willing to take some chances with his tees.
