Issue nine of art magazine ANP Quarterly is out. The magazine disappears quickly so pick it up while you can. ANP Quarterly is a full color, oversized art magazine that is published for free and without advertising.
So here we are, issue number nine of ANPQuarterly. That’s a funny number, right? The last issue marked two years of our publishing, so we’ve made it through our terrible twos - now and what an awful way to speak about children, right? If you call the kid terrible, then what can you really expect beyond that? Empowerment parenting anyone? The last issue, #8, was the infinity sign issue. But what is a 9? A nine? Well…in the tarot card deck, the number nine stands for a wish come true. That certainly is beautiful. Also, it’s the start of our third year, which is exciting, but perhaps more exciting, we are trying this new thing out: cover people that already have a ton of coverage. It’s true, we have covered oh so many legends in the past, but they have all been legends that were sort of in non-spotlight phases, in between career spotlights. We have never listened to publicists and always avoided locking into the overriding media timetable. We’ve even cut articles because people had new stuff coming out too close to the release of an issue, and thus their impending shine was to be plentiful enough. But somehow it turned out that this time around we are taking on three of our favorites who happen to be EVERYWHERE right now. Harmony Korine has a new movie, Mister Lonely, (his first in eight years!) coming out in a matter of months, Uta Barth just opened a major show at Tanya Bonakdar Gallery in NYC that the press rightfully loves, and Tomoo Gokita is in every magazine right now. But how deep is anyone really going with any of them?
Well, we’ll tell you where we’re going: we had old friends Aaron Rose and Ari Marcopolous visit the notoriously snarky and goat-getting Harmony Korine and they got him to say everything, seriously, finally the real story behind his landmark career in confrontation…it’s extra exciting to have such a comprehensive and personal account. Regular ANPQ contributor David Horvitz sits down with his mentor, contemporary photography legend Uta Barth, to have an incredibly heartfelt conversation about inspiration, career, working practice and other things that close friends discuss. Also, though there have been many beautiful reproductions of his art out there, we have never seen an interview with Tomoo Gokita ever except the one here (and the very short and sweet one in the new issue of The Journal that comes out right now as well see?) Who is this guy? We’ll let him tell you himself.
And actually, the thing in this issue about Wildfire Wildfire and the current state of underground art music in Baltimore fits into this pattern as well as does the New York Art Book Fair, and the artwork and DIY approach of Mark McCoy and his notorious hardcore record label Youth Attack, both of which are included in this issue as well. Huh. But then again, we’re giving space to artists Ashley Macomber and Leigh LeDare, both of whom are just warming up in the world, but have so so much more to come and we’re beyond honored to have them in here. And there’s more…

Before I discuss Proenza Schouler's latest collection, can we all give it up for the color purple? They color of royalty was very present last season - most notably in the form of sleek and slick patent accessories - like in Mullberry's iconic 'Bayswater' tote. The color was so prevalent that many a Fashionista had declared it "played out" A photographer at Getty even told the editors at Fashionista that if anyone wanted to have their picture taken at Fashion week, that better not show up in that yummy purple See by Chloe dress because the color was "so last season."Anyways, no designer in New York got the memo - especially not the lovely duo who make up Proenza Schouler.Their collection featured lush jewel toned hues of ... I'm usually something of a t-shirt traditionalist. I like bold, screenprinted shirts. They just appeal to me on a basic level. But here's the thing: I'm slowly coming over to the dark side of crafty shirts, because I've seen a lot of cool applique work lately.
One great example of some bold applique work is Binkie, a New Zealand-based t-shirt company. They use cut outs of basic, nature-inspired shapes (with collections focused on flowers, birds and other animals, and possessions). The specific fabrics they use are pretty fantastic, ranging from classic antique-style prints to solid colors to florals. The flower within a flower aspect of some of their Flowers collection is especially strong work.
But before you dismiss the applique concept as just for the ladies, check out their Possessions collection. Plaid pipes, floral guns and more prove that fabric on fabric can be a very masculine look, for any guy who's willing to take some chances with his tees.

If you like Ed Hardy T-shirts, you may love SpotMyTee as well. Started in November 2006, the Livingston, N.J.-based clothing label offers small collection of tees designed by professional tattooist like Chris "Mookie Rock" Faccone, Shannon Brown, Ty Lombardi and Matty Runks just to name a few. All thirteen artists' profile can be read here.
It's strange that I don't see much tattoo inspired T-shirts around despite (2003 survey says) "third of Americans with tattoos say they make them feel more sexy". And that's why I find SpotMyTee stands out from crowd. I remember someone asked if I know where to buy tattoo T-shirt online and I could not point her to anywhere else other than SpotMyTee and, alternatively, To Die For clothing.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art opens Jasper Johns: Gray today, February 5, and is the first exhibition to examine the use of the color gray in the work of American artist Jasper Johns.
From the mid-1950s to the present, gray has been a consistent thread in Johns’s practice and an important means for the artist to evoke different moods and to explore a range of formal ideas. This major exhibition offers a new lens through which to see the work of this pivotal American artist, bringing together more than 120 paintings, reliefs, drawings, prints, and sculptures. Jasper Johns: Gray features masterworks of Johns’s career — such as Canvas, Gray Target, Jubilee, 0 through 9, No, Diver, and The Dutch Wives — as well as works from the artist’s recent Catenary series and new works never before exhibited.
The exhibition examines the use of the color gray by the American artist Jasper Johns (b. 1930) between the mid-1950s and the present. Johns has worked in gray, at times to evoke a mood, at other times to evoke an intellectual rigor that results from his purging most color from his works.
One of the most important American painters and printmakers of the 20th century, Jasper Johns (b. 1930) emerged in the 1950s as a leading artist of the generation that followed “The New York School” of Abstract Expressionists. This exhibition is the first to focus on Johns’s varied use of gray, tracing the progression of this color throughout the work and highlighting its appearance in diverse media, such as encaustic, oil paint, Sculp-metal, aluminum, silver, lead, graphite, charcoal, and ink. As early as 1955, Johns was working in gray and finding infinite variety within a narrow color spectrum. With gray in particular, Johns’s sensuous, layered surfaces emphasize the physical properties of the work. The exhibition also focuses on the intellectual and emotional significance of gray in Johns’s work, and how it has varied over the past five decades.
On exhibit now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. 1000 Fifth Avenue.
Exhibition Dates: February 5 – May 4, 2008. Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Exhibition Hall, 2nd floor

I was extremely unhappy to hear about Heath Ledger’s death today, such a shock for such a young and talented actor. He was apparently found in his apartment in bed surrounded by sleeping pills, although there has been no confirmation if this was suicide or an accident. He’s recently worked on Batman - The Dark Knight as the Joker and it has been rumored to be some of his best work. Here’s a youtube video of him talking about playing the character.
